From May 17, 2015- May 31, I participated in a UC run study tour of Bordeaux, France. On the study tour we met and created friendships with students from the University of Bordeaux, visited museums and monuments, attended French language classes, and listened to lessons from French professors on the European Union. While in Bordeaux we also invested time in our own research projects - mine was on water remunicipalisation.
I chose to be a part of this study tour because as an engineering student I feel that there are few opportunities that allow you to learn outside your major and specific group of peers. On this trip I learned that to bridge the gap between cultures it is best to simply be yourself, and that you are likely to have more in common with your cultural counterparts than stereotypes may lead you to expect.
This experience changed my outlook on the world quite significantly. I realized that while the landscapes and buildings may be great in foreign lands, it is the people that are the true attraction. I hope to take future opportunities to explore Europe and beyond, and when I do I will take interest in the people and what they have to share.
